About Me

Jesse Fiddler (Sandy Lake First Nation)
Booshoo, Watcheyay, Hello

As an indigenous artist, I use a variety of mediums that includes wood, stone, paint, and canvas.  I spend a lot of time with my family and friends enjoying the land that the creator gifted us with. This includes fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, snowshoeing, traditional food preparation, and many of the community activities that go with it.

I bring my experiences with being on the land, water, and forest in Northwestern Ontario, Canada (Nishnawbie  Aski) to my artwork.   The relationship we have with the land is a healing and spiritual one.  I try to show the lessons I've learned from this relationship into my artwork.  I've had many teachers in my lifetime that have taught me about the land and our traditions as Anishinabie people.  These teachings are what I share with my own family as well.   My family has called many places in this land our home (Sioux Lookout, Sandy Lake, Muskrat Dam, Thunder Bay) and we continue with our traditions where ever we go.

As a part time artist with a full time job in Information Technology, I have been able to share my gifts with my family and community when I can.  I am fascinated with the process of creating artwork and the variety of tools and mediums that are accessible to us in this modern age.  I am somewhat of a collector of tools and natural materials, and I try to find a use for everything that I collect.  On our family excursions I usually bring home rocks, wood, and driftwood that are interesting.  Using these found materials brings an extra piece of the story to the artwork.

Influences

I enjoy following fellow Indigenous Artists as well as Chainsaw Carvers around the world.

I was most influenced by my father Ennis Fiddler and his artwork growing up.  He paints in a traditional woodland style like artists Norval Morrisseau and Carl Rae.

I continue to be inspired by all my kids who are all artistic and are pursuing their studies in art.

Expertise

My work focuses on using natural materials in new ways.    I like trying out old and new tools to finish a variety of pieces.

My main focus is chainsaw carving during the warm months.  During the winter, I prefer to paint and carve smaller pieces.

I do have a background in Information Technology, Graphic and Web Design, and Programming.   I use these skills to my advantage when I can.
